At City Church, we don't call our small groups "'Bible Study groups". A healthy small group will help its members apply the Bible to their lives, but it is not just a "Bible Study group". A healthy small group will spend significant chunks of time in prayer, but it is not just a "prayer group". A healthy small group will reach out to hurting people and support missions and missionaries, but it is not just an "outreach group".
A healthy small group could be seen as a type of family, with Jesus at the centre. Families are defined by who they are related to, not what they do. So, a healthy small group is a family of people who are related to Jesus ! But families also do things that reflect their values. So, if our small groups are families with Jesus at the center, then we need to be learning to value (and do) the things that Jesus values - loving and serving one another, enjoying each other's company, challenging each other to grow, stretching one another's faith, reaching out to those who need God's love ( doesn't everyone ? ) and leading them to the Father.
